Little Bull Auction & Sales Co.
Space Lift Tri-State Auctions LLC is honored to present the estate collection of Jack and Ellen Hughes of St. Joseph, Missouri. This is far more than a typical estate auction. It is the story of two individuals whose lives were dedicated to education, creativity, craftsmanship, history, and the preservation of the past. … For over 23 years, Jack and Ellen called their custom-designed home their own. Built specifically to reflect their passions and interests, every room was thoughtfully planned around the hobbies, collections, and pursuits that defined their lives. From the beautiful sunrise and sunset views that inspired them daily to the custom library, art studio, crafting spaces, and military display room, this home became a living reflection of who they were. Jack Hughes served as a Professor of Fine Arts at Missouri Western State University for 31 years. His life's work focused on art history, painting, printing, and art education. His passion for learning extended far beyond the classroom and into a remarkable collection of books, artwork, historical pieces, and educational materials gathered throughout decades of study and travel. Alongside him, Ellen Hughes built a legacy of creativity and craftsmanship. A talented seamstress and crafter, she filled the home with artistic projects, collections, and handmade touches that reflected her dedication to her craft. Together, Jack and Ellen shared a deep love for American history. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, often visiting Civil War battlefields, museums, historical landmarks, and sites of national significance. Along the way, they carefully assembled an extraordinary collection of military memorabilia, historical antiques, books, artwork, pottery, and Americana that now forms the centerpiece of this auction. Collectors will discover a lifetime accumulation of World War I and World War II memorabilia, Civil War-related collectibles, military displays, historical artifacts, antiques, pottery, fine artwork, rare books, and unique pieces acquired during decades of travel and exploration. Many items were personally selected and brought home from historical destinations across the country, preserving pieces of America's story for future generations. Among the home's many unique features was a dedicated military collection display room, designed specifically to showcase historical artifacts and memorabilia. The custom library housed an extensive collection of books and media accumulated throughout Jack's academic career, while dedicated crafting and art spaces reflected the couple's lifelong commitment to creativity and learning. This auction offers a rare opportunity to acquire pieces from a collection assembled not for investment, but out of genuine appreciation for history, art, education, and craftsmanship.
